The latest volume in our series of classic CYBERFUNK mixes
Thank you for subscribing to this substack—it means the world to us here at INDUSTRIAL STREAMING INFORMATION LOGISTICS you’ve given us your time.
I’m enjoying writing weekly posts (and they will continue weekly for the forseeable future) on the CYBERFUNK phenomenon, a specific slice of mid-80s songs united by their liminal aesthetic commonality which were never fully reappraised, remained the ‘runt’ of the era’s reclaimable styles.
One thing about being a music nerd is that you eventually get bored with the way stories about the past have been presented, and need a new way of looking at things. you need to shake things up a bit. And this is how I smashed-up, fractured, and re-soldered this edifice of dust-covered sounds.
While keeping up via this substack is recommended for true CYBERFUNK aficionados, I don’t think there’s any shortcut to ‘really getting it’ like buying the accompanying mixes. The DJ mix is the central plank, the contrast of sounds and styles the source of explanatory power which illuminates the entire structure.
This is why I suggest you, the reader, take a brief moment of your time to purchase these limited-edition mix CDs, with art I designed and which I will also personally mail at my own local post office (no corporate shipping companies). The mixes were recorded without edits, played straight through, to capture the vibrant kinetic energy of the recording session. Just listening to it brings back the smell of the candle, the taste of the coffee, the paperback copy of Mona Lisa Overdrive I used as a coaster.
The CDs can be purchased for $10 here. The writing here explores the layers of thought at work in the mixes, which are the real purpose of all this. You will better grasp the correct vibe experiencing these songs in that context, than you’re liable to gather reading 100 substack posts. These posts simply document the thought processes necessary for the creation of the DJ mixes, a gestalt which doesn’t actually exist in any other coherent form in the real world.
