Announcing the Release of 'Time to Make the World End: Vol. IV'
A trove of Cyberfunk slaps revealed....
Due to the obligations of my employment, the last several weeks this substack has been somewhat dormant. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to commit the time I’d like to this side project—though never fear, more content is on the way.
There’s much to talk about in the world of CYBERFUNK—the passing of Keith LeBlanc deserves a focused entry. Likewise, the success of Future, Kendrick Lamar, and Metro Boomin’s “Like That,” with its prominent sample of Rodney O. and Joe Cooley’s Cyberfunk classic “Everlasting Bass,” and the explosive popularity of Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby,” with its Cyber-Phonk production, feel like validations of the primary contentions of this substack: that 1980s Cyberfunk aesthetics feel fresh and exciting in a time when the Sabrina Carpenters of the world are running disco into the ground.
I always make time, however, for the main activity this entire project was intended to promote—DJing a distinctly-curated set of “CYBERFUNK” tracks in my bedroom. During my birthday weekend, I threw together LIVE an unrehearsed mix, in one take, of Cyberfunk music (with some unexpected swerves, though I would argue the spirit of Cyberfunk is in its swerves regardless).
The CYBERFUNK mixes—Vol. III is still available for purchase on the ISIL.CLUB website, and exists exclusively in CD form—are mainly crafted with the express intent of not scaling. However I recognize fewer people than ever seem to have CD players, and I refuse to hold this personal failing against you all. Therefore, I’ve released this more “spontaneous”/ “let the seams show” edition of the Time to Make the World End mix CD series onto YouTube, SoundCloud, and Mixcloud. (Volume II was also released on YouTube and is still available. Volume I was released on CD and sold out; Vol III is still available on CD for a limited time, and will never be on streaming).
